March Madness has returned, as the NCAA Basketball Tournament arrives bringing another month of what is expected to be exciting matchups among the 68 best teams in college basketball. It is estimated, according to ACNielsen, that an average of 10.5 million to 11 million viewers will watch each game, and an estimated 25 million will watch the Final Four and the Championship game, and many students and staff members at New Town High School are geared up to watch this year’s tournament.
“The NCAA Basketball Tournament is always fun to see,” said Marques Jackson-Smith, freshman. “To me, it’s better to watch it than to actually play basketball.”
“I love watching basketball. It’s really exciting to watch the best in college basketball face-off against each other for that national championship,” said Mr. O’Connor, social studies teacher.
With every college basketball tournament, there’s always the option of filling out the brackets (the style of how the basketball matches of all 68 teams play out against each other) as a predictor of all the different winners, the Final Four, and the eventual tournament and national champion. This can be done for money or for fun, but everyone who filled their brackets that talked to the Titan Chronicle stated that they all filled brackets for the fun.
“I feel like filling in the brackets is a great way of tracking someone’s favorite team,” said Datwuin Richardson, sophomore. “It helps you keep track of their progress, as well as looking at other teams to see who is competitive, who isn’t, and which team has the best chance of knocking off your favorite team.”
“We have a contest every year in my family involving the brackets to see whose picks of the Final Four and the tournament champions are the best or dead on. It can get pretty interesting,” said Mr. Parker, assistant principal.
However, not everyone who stated they were watching the tournament this year said were taking part in filling out brackets.
“With all the potential upsets and momentum shifters that can and have happened can really mess up someone’s bracket. I stopped doing brackets a couple of years back, because of these and also because there will always be that one sleeper team than stands out and makes a run for the final four,” exclaimed Khalid Jones, senior.
As for who is favored to win among the interviewees, various teams and responses were received.
“Syracuse is my team,” said Thomas Brown, senior. “They’re the best team in college basketball, period. They are number one.”
“I love to follow my favorite team, West Virginia, as well as North Carolina. However, I do feel that North Carolina is going to win the tournament, because they are the best all-around team out there, they have an excellent coach (Roy Williams), and they have some of the best basketball players in the NCAA,” said Mr. Mustipher, principal.
“I’m hoping Ohio State wins the national championship,” said Greg Jones, senior. “They have the best offense and the best defense out there, and they’re the ones that can get the farthest and accomplish winning the national champion.”
